My secret garden

3 Aug

Sometimes we get caught up in the chaos of completing our to do lists and focusing on the work grind, that we don’t take the time to sit back and enjoy a cappuccino. I thought back to last summer and remembered all the coffee and gelato and that I needed to get back to the whole enjoying the present moment.

A close friend shared a great quote with me the other day… “Oprah wasn’t made in a day.” For the life of me I couldn’t remember when the last time I took time to go to lunch. Since life is worth enjoying I scooped up the closest friend and headed off to what I call my own secret garden in the middle of Dallas. Forty Five Ten’s T Room.

If you have never been before I highly suggest it for a mid-day pick me up or lunch spot.

The restaurant is connected to what I dare say is the greatest collaboration of home goods, clothing and fragrances in Dallas. Word to the wise, unless you plan on buying everything and have zero self control like myself, park in the back.

They carry every sort of candle a girl can lust over. You are forewarned.

After walking through a little slice of heaven you reach the T Room.

We quickly ordered glasses of Prosecco and did not mess around to getting properly caught up on the weekends festivities. The menu changes seasonally and they offer a combo option for those of you who simply cannot make up your mind and wish to order a bit of everything.

I opted for the combo artichoke panini and hearts of palm salad subbing cheese for avocado. My luch mate opted for the tuna melt and seasonal watermelon salad.

After eating to our hearts content, we found out they were all of JOY macaroons. These little round delights are worth hunting down. Guess that may end up being another adventure. The waitress really had to persuade us into settling for the flour-less chocolate cake.

After realizing all the other lunching ladies had left, we realized we must get back to the concrete jungle ourselves.

Not without an almond milk cappuccino though.

In lab last week we learned about what makes a print advertisement effective. For my blog post I decided to analyze the Absolute advertisement below.

This ad portrays two very important messages in this one print ad. Using the iconic silhouette of the bottle to inform the reader as to what company the ad is for is very effective as an ad. The second important role of the silhouette is the bottle is acting as a dead body on the sidewalk to represent a person has died from not drinking responsibly.

Incorporating the “mandatory” that the company has to include to drink responsibly as part of the ad is extremely clever. Absolute had the car crash incorporate the iconic bottle figure in the ad effectively. In addition to minimal copy on the ad and just the tagline of the product is simple and well defines the repercussions of drinking and driving. This ad very effectively addresses the main issue with drinking and acting stupidly.

Feature Story

8 Oct

This feature story about a well known equestrian friend of mine. This feature story was written directly to the equestrian audience of the website. Overall the article was on the short side for a feature story. This certain event has affected the equestrian community greatly so any and all information about the Olympics has been important for many to hear about.

The quotes that were chosen to be included were relevant to story and gave good insight as to what Lauren went through. By allowing the reader to feel the emotional events unravel is what makes this story special.

After reading many feature stories I believe this one maybe rather on the short side of a feature stories but was informative at the length it was.

Media Kit

5 Oct

After having to complete my first media kit I realized that compiling this group of documents is not an easy task.

This example does a great job of organizing all of the information in a media kit that is trying to be conveyed to the client. Being able to give the more information in a short and organized manner is important to not waste anyone’s time that will be reading the information to possibly publish.

Compiling all the information needed for a media kit is a extensive process. Being able to present a company with a media kit is a useful tool to market a story or event. The end result needs to be professional and organized. The most important part of the media kit is to make sure to included contact information for anyone who may give assistance to make this story or event a success. The easier the reader can get the idea of a story or pitch the more likely the story will be published. The more exposure a story gets is sometimes a result of how well put together the media kit was.

By providing a professional  with a  media kit the story will most likely be published if the sender is a reputable source and has done good work in the past. Having a relationship with a professional writer or editor opens up many opportunities for a piece to be showcased or expanded upon.

News Release

28 Sep

I will be reviewing my friends news release for the third blog post for this assignment. The picture below will provide the reader with something to compare this review to.

Her news release was a couple of paragraphs too long. Brevity in a news release is better for the journalist who is reading to publish it. By wasting a journalists time by sending to many long new releases can irritate the professional and have them never read your work so the information never makes it to the public. A news release should be short and to the point. Informing the journalist briefing about the story and then an easy way of contacting the sender or anyone in charge of the project.

Blog Review

20 Sep

The blog I will be reviewing is Little Miss Momma blog page. The overall appeal of this website is that the images the author has incorporated into the theme are well executed.

One of the things that I found distracting on the blog was all the different advertising. It was very hard to differentiate what was a link to a DIY project or something that the blogger is promoting. All of the links worked on the page allowing for easy access to pages. The amount of writing on the blog pots was enough to get the point across and not so short that I was left wanting to read more on the topic.
I really enjoyed the colorful backgrounds and picture tutorials for cooking or craft projects. Overall this blog is a healthy balance from the guidelines we are learning in class.

Website Review

13 Sep

For my first post I will be reviewing the Dover Saddlery website.

Upon reaching the homepage the first thing that stood out to me was that there is a lot of text in the upper portion of the page.  The pictures of the horses need to be bigger to balance out all the text. One thing I had a hard time understand is why they put two search bars right next to each other.

The color scheme of gray, green and tan looks beautiful and compliments the horse pictures on the page. All of the links work on the homepage, which is a great aspect of the website. Another thing I felt that was effective was the well organized design. The text was centered in the middle of the page giving the reader easy text to read.
